Museum of mosaics
The Museum of Mosaics is one of the main attractions of town of Devnya. It is an unique for Bulgaria museum where are displayed early-Byzantine mosaics from the ancient settlement of Marcianopolis.
The Museum was built on the ancient foundations of the "building with the mosaics" dated to the end of III - beginning of IV century (regim of Constantine I - the Great) and lasted in the beginning of VII century. There are presented also various materials associated with the building architecture and lifestyle of its ancient inhabitants.
The museum contains some of the best examples of Roman mosaic art found in Bulgaria.
Highlights:
- The Gorgon Medusa Mosaic - size 8,00 x 8,00 m, represent the shield of the goddess Pallas Athena decorated with the decapitated head of Gorgon Medusa
- The Satyr and Antiope Mosaic - size 5,60 x 4,40 m, covered with mosaic, depicting one of the numerous love affairs of Zeus, the supreme Greek god. It is an extremely rare plot among the preserved mosaics dating back that far and the only one with (Greek) inscription - "ΣΑΤΥΡΟΣ / ΑΝΤΙΟΠΗ"
- The Ganymede and the Eagle Mosaic - size (5,60 13,40 m .displays the ancient Greek legend of Ganymede and the eagle
- The Seasons Mosaic - size 8.60 x 7.80 m. Displays a circular emblem of figured type is inscribed into a rectangular frame of geometric ornaments, surrounded by intertwining geometrical ornaments. A rooster picking at grapes, birds and a pair of Roman sandals are depicted in the empty spaces.
- The Panonian Volutes Mosaic - consists of repeated geometric patterns in four colours
Museum of Mosaics in Devnya is included in the list of 100 national tourist sites of Bulgaria.
