The historical museum in Smolyan was founded in 1935 by Stoyou Nedelev Shishkov - an enlightener and researcher of Rhodopes. Now the museum has the name of its founder. There are displayed over 150 000 items including a rich numismatic collection, an arms collection, works dedicated to various themes from the Rhodopes by famous Bulgarian painters.
