Assara fortres to mine Zvezdel
Asara is a medieval fortress near the mine Zvezdel, south of the village with the same name - Zvezdel. The Fortress was built in XI-XII century and was used to guard the mine, where was extracted gold and silver.
The Fortification is situated on a height that dominates over the region - Mt Asara. There were two square towers and almost all of its walls were wooden, which is rare in the Bulgarian lands. The two towers were connected by a passageway cut into the rocks. The eastern tower had a water reservoir (tank) whose bottom was oblique (for the precipitation), plastered with pink mortar and the water was scrubbing by sands. In one of the towers have been found remains of living quarters and a chapel.
The most valuable find of archaeological research conducted on the site is found in the chapel - a unique medallion - part of an icon, decorated with gold fittings.
