Fortress Kalotinsko "Gradishte"
Type: Fortress
Location: Village Kalotintsi »
In Bulgarian: Крепост Калотинско "Градище" »
In the mountains above the village of Kalotintsi (municipality Zemen) are found remains of walls and reservoirs of a medieval fortress, known by the locals as "Gradiste".
It is assumed the fortress was established during the II-nd Bulgarian Kingdom, to guard the trade roads. Probably it was a part of the defense system of the fortress "Zemlin grad" (aka "Zemlungrad" or "Zemensko kale" - nowadays - town of Zemen).
The fortress was built in the mountains (altitude 915 meters) and had an area of about 3 acres. The fortification walls were built of stone bonded with mortar. Nowadays the outline of the walls can be seen under embankment.
