Mryansko Kale
Type: Fortress
Location: Town Strelcha »
In Bulgarian: Мрянско кале »
The remains of the fortress Mryansko Kale are located about 11 km north of town of Strelcha, on the right bank of the river Luda Yana. The castle is situated in the woods, on a hard to access mountain hill of Sredna Gora mountain. Initially the castle was built as a fortified residence of the Thracian king from the Odrisi tribe, who lived in the IV century BC. Probably later it was used as a Roman fortress (II - III century), which guarded the road through Sredna Gora mountain.
The area of the castle was about 200 m2 and there was at least 2-storey height. The walls were made of large stone blocks (each weighing about 1 ton) arranged alternately in a chess-board order.
