Granitsa Medieval fortress

Type: Fortress

The remains of the medieval fortress Granitsa are preserved in the area called Gradishteto - one naturally protected location of about 4 kilometers south - west from the village of Granitsa in the municipality of Kyustendil. The fortress dates back to the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.

The Granitsa fortress was part of the defense ring around town of Velbajd and its role was to control the road Velbuzhd - Shtip. The fortress was built by stones, joined with white
mortar. Its shape is not quite defined, but the presence of round towers had been established.

Near the fortress the monastery of Saint Luke (X century) is located.
