Perperikon (aka Hyperperakion or Perperakion) is located in the Eastern Rhodope range, south of village of Gorna krepost and some 15 kilometers north-east of town of Kurdzhali. There is an archaeological complex which contains a large megalithic/Thracian sanctuary, a sacred city and medieval fortress.
The site is situated on a rocky peak around 420m above sea level. According to archaeological evidence, human activity in the area dates back to 5000 B.C.
