Sanctuary of Asclepius Zemidrenski
Type: Sanctuary, Archaeological site
Location: Village Patalenitsa »
In Bulgarian: Светилище на Асклепий Земидренски »
The remains of the sanctuary of Asclepius Zemidrenski are located between the villages of Patalenitsa and Vetren dol. The ritual site was built in the late I century and functioned until the end of the IV century, when it was burned.
The sanctuary was discovered even before the Liberation of Bulgaria at the territory of the village of Batkun (merged in 1955 with village of Patalenitsa). It was a square building with dimensions 19x19 meters and walls of bricks and stones. The hall was covered with a wooden structure. In the room there was a sacred spring known as the "sanctuary of Asclepius".
Excavations have found votive tablets of the Thracian Heros, statues, an altar, many coins, etc. An interesting fact is that the votive tablets have not Roman inscriptions (Thrace was a Roman province at the time) but with inscriptions in Old-Greek (according to recent research there are also Phoenician letters).
The archaeological finds from the sanctuary of Asclepius are stored in Plovdiv and Pazardzhik museum.
