Type: Archaeological site
Location: Village Dolno Cherkovishte »
In Bulgarian: Тракийски светилища в местност Кован-кая »
In the region of Eastern Rhodopes are located many cultural and historical monuments related to the Thracians - remains of Thracian settlements, fortresses, tombs, sanctuaries and more. One of the largest megalithic Thracian cult complex was found in the area Kovan-Kaya near the village of Dolno Cherkovishte. The complex includes large number (over 100) carved into the rock niches and trapezoidal tomb-cave. It is assumed that the niches were used for placing urns containing the ashes of cremated corpses.
500 meters northwest of Dolno Cherkovishte, at a large rock, is located another Thracian sanctuary with 6 cult stone niches and a tomb carved on the top of the massif. Nearby were discovered traces of a Thracian settlement.
