The ruins of ancient town Ulpia Anhialeon Paleokastro (aka Anchialos or Uplpia Nona) are still uncovered and lie under not so big layer of earth and stones at area, known as "Paleokastro" near Pomorie.
The town (under the name Anhialo) was inhabited by Thracians from long times. It became a Roman province in 45 AD but receives autonomy during reign of the Roman emperor Trajan (98-117) who made it (under the name Uplia Nona) one of the several autonomous cities together with Nicopolis ad Nestum, Nicopolis ad Istrum, Ulpia Serdika, Topir (near the mouth of the Mesta River), Ulpia Eskus, Ulpia Aureya (Zlatitsa) and Ulpia Pautalia. Most of them put the generic name of the emperor - Ulpia, as prefix in their names.
From V to X century the name of the town was Ulpia Anhialeon Paleocastro.
