Museum of the History of Medicine
Museum of the History of Medicine in Varna was established in 1985. It is housed in a beautiful building - a monument of culture, dating back to the years before Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule. The building was constructed in 1869 as a charity hospital and was always used for health needs. During the war, As well as a hospital, it was used as base on an anti-rabies and a bacteriology station, the predecessor of todays Regional Inspectorate for Protection and Control of Public Health (in Bulgarian RIOKOZ). Here was created also the Varna maternity hospital.
The museum consists of 3 halls where is traced the history and the development of medicine since ancient times (Neolithic Age in the fifth millennium BC, Copper Age) to the present days.
Exposures:
- In the first room of the museum is set an anthropological collection - bones and skulls found during various excavations. Bones are researched and there are explanation about their owners - their growth, how long was their life, what were their illness, etc. Exhibition covers the period from the fifth millennium BC to XIV century AD.
- In the second room are presented Bulgaria traditional medicine and the various methods used for medical treatment - herbal remedies, fortune-tellers, casting bullet against fear, heating pads, knives sticking and others. This exposure is primarily covered the period from XIV to XIX century.
- In the third hall are displayed the appliances, tools and other equipment of doctors offices, from the years of Liberation of Bulgaria to the present days. There are models of doctor, dental offices, and old pharmacy, as they have looked in the beginning of XX century.
The museum also has a specialized library of old medical literature.
