Bojentsi Historical and architectural reserve
Village of Bojentsi (aka Bojentsite) is located 16 km. east of Gabrovo. This is one of the few villages in Bulgaria, which has preserved all its view from the period of Bulgarian Renaissance. The houses and buildings in the village have been renovated to their view from XVIII century.
The houses are located on two opposite hills, and are combination of stone and wood, with heavy stone roof, stone walls around courtyards, overgrown with ivy. The streets are small and steep, covered with stones.
The typical house of Bojentsi is a two or three-storey building with a high lower ground-floor where are situated domestic and business premises, warehouses, cellars and shops. There is an external staircase leads to the veranda, through which is entered to the living room, the kitchen (soba) and the bedroom (odaya). Most of the houses have a large corner fireplace. The upper floor has several niches.
The interior of the houses follow the same style - wooden furniture, carved ceilings, decorated with different motifs, colorful village rugs, etc.
Some of the most typical monuments in Bozhentsi are the Church "Prophet Elijah" (1835), The School (1872), House of Doncho Popa and others.
Village of Bojentsi is a favorite destination for Bulgarian and foreign visitors who will to go back in the time and to experience the peace and spirit of the typical Bulgarian mountain village from the Renaissance period. Many of the houses here are adapted to accommodate guests and there are several restaurants where the tourists can taste traditional Bulgarian dishes.
In 1964 Bojentsi was declared Historical and architectural reserve.
