The monument of Pope John Paul II in the town of Belene was opened on 15 November 2014. The town is the birthplace of the Catholic priest Eugene Bossilkov - one of the four Bulgarian martyrs declared blessed by the Pope during his visit to Bulgaria in 2001
The opening ceremony was present by the President of Bulgaria - Rosen Plevneliev. He noted the essential role of St. Pope John Paul II in the struggle of millions of East Europeans for freedom and dignity.
