The Russian monument was built on June 29, 1882. This is the first monument in Sofia, erected after the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Funds for its construction were collected by the Russian people.
The Russian monument is a stone pyramid with a truncated top. On the east side of the obelisk stands a marble relief with the coat of arms of Russia and the Order of St. George (Georgievski Cross - Russian military medal for bravery). There is engraved an inscription "В царствованіи Александра II-го императора всероссійского волея и любовью его освобождена Болгария 19 февраля 1878 года". On the western side there is other plate with other inspiration: "Не намъ. Не намъ, а имени твоему. 1877 - 1878".
Today around the monument is built a round-juction connecting two of busy boulevard - "Skobelev" and "Totleben".
