Sozopol's Vampire

In the summer of 2012, archaeologists came across an unusual finding in the old town of Sozopol - the remains of a medieval vampire. To an ancient temple, among many cemeteries, the team found two burials older than 700 years, with clear signs of rituals against vampire. The bodies were pierced through the chest with iron rods to supposedly stop them from turning into vampires.

The discovery was followed by similar findings near Perpirikon and Veliko Tarnovo.

The vampires found in Bulgaria for a very short time provoked significant media interest in Bulgaria and abroad. Several authoritative medias as "Daily telegraph", "Independent", National Geographic and others make materials about the vampire graves and the rituals against vampires practiced in these lands.

After the discovery of the Sozopol`s vampire, Bulgaria became one of the most attractive destinations for "vampire tourism" in the world, ranked honorable fourth place. The glory of the vampire from Sozopol overtaken that of Count Dracula (Romania), who is fifth in this ranking (first there is the Museum of vampires in Paris).

For a time, the remains of the Sozopol vampire are exhibited in the National History Museum (NHM) in Sofia and for this time the visits were is to raised by 30%. Because of the unprecedented interest the find was moved again in Sozopol, where it was found, and the town already attracts foreigners who came specifically to see the vampire.

While for some people it may sounds frivolous and is only a sensation, after the discoveries of the vampire skeletons, more people in Bulgaria thinks about the development of so-called vampire tourism.

Sozopol Municipality and Romanian Sighisoara (the city of Drakula) decided to work together for joint "vampire product", that will help for development of tourism in the both  municipalities. They will participate together in various tourism fairs and will presenting the so-called "Trail of vampirism".

The tourists who visiting Romania to see the home of the notorious Count Dracula will be asked to visit the vampire of Sozopol too.
