Castle of Khan Omurtag
The "Aul of Khan Omurtag" is an ancient Bulgarian castle built in 822 following a pattern of the Old Bulgarian capital Pliska. It is located in the area called "Hisar Kale" near the village of Khan Krum, municipality Veliki Preslav, Shumen province.
The entire complex around the area of the palace is an insight to the history of the Goths. There are numerous tombs of the Goths, where were found different valuable finds. Among them are jewelry, a box with adornment and a golden agrafa. The agrafa has been a traditional part of the clothing of the Goths used to clip their clothes.
In the vicinity immediate to the Palace were found Gothic churches. In one of them, which dates from the IV th century, were found Christian frescoes. According to archaeologists they are the earliest discovered in the Bulgarian lands. It is believed this church have been the personal property of the Gothic Bishop Wulfila, who created the German alphabet and translated the Gothic Bible.
