Megalithic stone observatory - cromlech
Type: Archaeological site
Location: Village Staro Jelezare »
In Bulgarian: Кромлех - каменна астрономическа обсерватория »
The Cromlech (a megalithic structures) near village of Staro Jelezare is located about 1 kilometer from the village center - direction south-east, at eastern side of the road to Novo Jelezare. It was found in 2002 by the archaeologist Georgi Kitov, who thought that the facility was used by the Thracians as calendar and time measuring and named it "astronomical observatory".
The cromlech near Staro Jelezare has a diameter of 6.5 to 7 meters and consists of 24 stone pillars (menhirs) with height from 0.5 to 2 meters. The stones in the northern semicircle are higher than these in the southern.
When was found the stone complex was very well preserved because it was buried under a mound and did not suffer from erosion. Unfortunately, today many of the stone pillars (the menhirs) are broken because they were made from very fragile and precarious cliff.
