Thracian complex Kozi Gramadi
The archaeological site "Thracian town at Kozi Gramadi" is located in the "Sredna gora" mountain, about 20 kilometers from village of Starosel, at Kozi Gramadi summit (1100 m). The easiest way to reach it by an off-road car to Fenera hut, then walk to the site.
The Complex includes several monumental buildings, encircled by a wall. It was built V - IV century BC by Odrisses and consists of guarding-towers and walls following the relief of the region and passing the most difficult places to reach. The main building was the residence of the ruler of the kingdom of Odrisses. The building had an area of 104 square meters and is designed precisely with hewn stone. Its floors was build by ceramics. The entrance of the palace facing the valley and reveals a great view of the region, allowing the observers to react even in the slightest danger.
After Macedonian expansion on the Balkans (359 BC) the fortress became a "victim" of Alexander the Great. Signs of the fierce battle are the arrows, lead weights and the sling spearheads found in the area. After the collapse of the Macedonian Empire, the Thracians returned the control of its town again.
The excavations of the site began in 2005 under the direction of archaeologist Ivan Hristov from the National History Museum. In 2011 was published the first volume of the studies. There were found many coins of the Kings Teres II, and I Cotis Amatok, fragments of gold breastplate and double ax-labrys, which is typical for the martial equipment of the Thracians.
The findings also include more than 20 temples, stone tombs and rock formations that were used in religious rituals in the cult to the Sun.
Around Mt Goat Gramada has many unexplored sites, including fortified line located 500-800 meters north and a small Christian basilica. Because the great archaeological value of the site the scientists call the Thracian city at Kozi Gramadi "The Bulgarian Machu Picchu" - а lost city where the history speaking and the spirit of the Thracian Kings can be felt. The Region around Mt Kozi Gramadi is declared a protected area. The Sacred Mountains of Odrisses will be offered for monument of national importance.
