Antique and medieval fortress "Slavnata kanara"
Type: Fortress
Location: Village Debrene »
The remains of antique and medieval fortress "Slavnata kanara" (the name is of more recent times and comes from the locality where the site is located) is situated near the village of Debrene. The road to the castle is difficult. The site is situated in a dense forest, starting near the sea coast - Batova valley and reach the plateau.
It is assumed that "Slavnata kanara" was a big religious complex, and around it gradually arose the fortification. For the first time the site was excavated in 1989-1990. There were revealed remains of a large basilica, dating to th late Roman times and existed until the end of the VI century, the eastern gate, the northern wall, moat, ground housing.
It is assumed that the fortress existed until around the X century when it was conquered and burned by Russian troops of Prince Svyatoslav or from the Byzantines in the fall of Eastern Bulgaria in 971
In studies performed here were found many artifacts, including bronze belt of medieval Bulgarian dignitary from the end of IX and the beginning of the X century, three roman sword, an ancient amphora with 1200 early Byzantine bronze coins, buttons, pottery and more.
Currently (2015) there are projects for basic restoration of the castle and the road to it that will make the site a destination for cultural tourism.
