Gornovasilishki Monastery "Ascension of the God"
The Monastery of The Ascension (also known as Monastery of "St. Spas") is situated 6km away from the village of Gorna Vaslitsa, in a picturesque area under the peak Benkovski in Eledzhik Mountain (Ihtimanska Sredna gora). The monastery dates to XII-XIV centuries but during the Ottoman rule it was demolished and restored again in 1885. In its present view it is dating from 1908. On the eve of the Balkan War (September, 8, 1912) it was officialy opened by the Levkiyskiya Bishop Barlaam.
In the monastery are kept many valuable icons including: the icon "Ascension", donated in 1889 by a resident of the village of Dolna Vasilitsa, the icon of Jesus Christ donated in 1911 by an inhabitant of the village of Gorna Vasilitsa and an icon of St. John the Baptist - a gift from a resident of the village of Dolna Vasilitsa in 1912.
Not far away from the monastery is situated other historic landmark - The Fortress Trayanovi vrata.
