Batoshevo male monastery "Uspenie Bogorodichno"
There are 2 monasteries in the lands of the village of Batoshevo - the Male monastery "Uspenie Bogorodichno", located on the left bank of Rositsa river, high in Sevlievo mountain (4-5 km South-West of the village), and the Nunnery "Vavedenie Bogorodichno", situated in the village.
The male monastery was founded in XIII century (during the reign of King Michael II Asen - 1246-1256) by the Bulgarian Patriarch and has operated as a "stavropigialen" (from the Greek: σταυροπήγια, from σταυρός – "cross" and πηγνύω-"zabivam" - used for monasteries or churches, which are under the direct jurisdiction of the Supreme church authority) . It has been directly subordinate to the Patriarch and was freed from taxes and fees.
During the Ottoman rule the monastery was deserted, but was restored in the XIX-th century with the help of generous donors from Sevlievo, and Gabrovo. The monks from the monastery have taken part in the preparation of the April uprising in Sevlievo region. Here were resided many Bulgarian revolutionaries as Bacho Kiro Petrov and Angel Kanchev. Part of the cells were burned in the suppression of the uprising, but have been restored again after the Liberation.
The monastery complex consists of church, two-storey residential buildings, bell-tower and farm buildings. The Church is stone pseudo-Basilica with three ships and three domes. The indoor and outdoor parts are richly painted. Especially valuable are the big wood-carved iconostasis and the preserved icons by Tzanjo Zahariev (Stariat, 1790-1886) - representative of the Tryavna painting school. There are original murals in the western part of the outdoor narthex, at the central dome and to the vaults.
Currently the Male monastery "Uspenie Bogorodichno" in village of Batoshevo is acting and has been declared a monument of culture. His latest restoration was in 1970
