Ethnographic Museum
Ethnographic Museum in town of Elhovo was created in 1966 as a successor of the existing from 1958 a museum collection. The aim of the museum is to study, collect, preserve and promote the variety of the local ethnographic inheritance of the community and the entire region around the mountains Strandja and Sakar.
The museum is housed in two buildings in the town center which were built in 1933 and 1960s were united. The museum fund includes 22,000 objects, 13,800 from which constitute the primary museum fund.
The Ethnographic exhibition is very interesting and was created in 1971. It covers an area of 244 m2 in 4 halls:
- Hall 1: exhibits are related to the main livelihoods of the population in the late XIX and early XX centuries - agriculture, wine, tobacco, livestock, hunting and fishing, copper and tailoring
- Hall 2: there are shown interiors of traditional Elhovo homes from the end of the XIX and beginning of XX century
- Hall 3: there are represented exhibits related to the traditional clothing of the local population from the southeastern region of Bulgaria in the end of XIX century - children, male and female, daily and festive, clothing. There is included costumes of Bulgarian immigrants from Edirne and White-Sea Thrace - Gyumyurdjinsky, Uzunkyupriysko, Dedeagachko
- Hall 4: It is set for some traditional holidays and customs, as marriage, kukeri, Christmas caroling and other folk rituals
The exposition ends with examples of woodcarving and icon painting art from the XIX century, the distinctive work of local craftsmen.
Since 2003 Elhovo ethnographic museum is included in the list of the 100 National Tourist Sites of Bulgaria.
