Vishegrad fortress
Vishegrad fortress (aka "Hissar Yustu" or "Gorna krepost") is located north of village of Vishegrad, in Rhodopes mountain. It is situated on a panoramic peak above the Arda River and dam of Studen Kladenets. The fortress was built probably in XII-XII century over the base of an existing antique citadel. Some of the fortress walls are still preserved and have height up to 6 meters.
The area of the castle is a small (562 square meters) and according its structure and size this is a typical feudal castle from the Middle Ages - probably residence of the governor of the area Ahridos. It was used to control the main road passing through the region.
Vishegrad fortress was in relation with the great fortress Mneakos (ака Monyak fortress) which is located on the opposite hill.
