The ruins of the medieval fortress of Monyak is located in Rhodopes mountain at rocky peak called "Sixth fortress" (586 meters), 2 km south of the village of Shiroko Pole. It was built in XII-XIII century and used to be the main fortification of the Bulgarian rulers of the region at the dawn of the Bulgarian State. Monyak is connected also with the crusade in 1206 in the region.

The fortress is one of the largest (over 50 decares) and highest fortresses in the Rhodope Mountain.
