Fortress Trapezitsa
Type: Fortress
Location: Town Veliko Turnovo »
In Bulgarian: Крепост Трапезица »
The Trapezitsa hill is on of the three hills near Veliko Tarnovo (Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora) where the Old Bulgarian capital Tarnovo was situated. The hill is located on the left shore of the Yantra river, northwest of the Tsarevetz hill. It is a natural fortification, surrounded on three sides by the river.
The fortress on Trapezitsa was built somewhere in XIII century and during the Second Bulgarian kingdom there were housed the main church buildings of the capital city, the Patriarchate and the Patriarch`s residence. In the past, the high walls of the fortification were rising on the steep rocks.
Nowadays the site attracts many visitors, but unlike the remains at Tsarevets hill, those at Trapezitsa are not so well preserved.
