The Fortress Kaleto (aka "Shsihmanova Fortress") is located on the western hill of Nikopol, overlooking the town.
It was initially built by the Romans as a border fortifying post, and Nikopol was then built around this fortress.
The fortress has been found to contain artifacts dating back to the XIth century, from the Roman, Bulgarian, and Turkish periods of occupation.
Kaleto Fortress was declared a cultural monument in 1965.
