Medieval Fortress in Palankata area
Type: Fortress
Location: Town Vetren »
In Bulgarian: Средновековна Крепост в местност Паланката »
Northwest of the town of Vetren (Pazardzhik province) are situated ruins of a medieval castle. In the past, here was located a village with name Palanka that was demolished in the past.
It is suggested the fortress was a castle of the local Bulgarian ruler - despot Novak Debeli and it was probably used by Khan Krum in his intercept of the Byzantine army led by Emperor Nicephorus. In the battle later (somewhere near Maritsa river not far away ot the current town of Septemvri) the Byzantines were defeated and the Emperor himself was killed.
