Krakra fortress is situated in the southwestern outskirts of the town of Pernik. It has strategic position and its key role was to keep the western border of the Bulgarian kingdom. During the X-th and XI-th centuries, the fortress became the main fortification of the local ruler, Krakra of Pernik. from where its name origin.
Krakra fortress was massive and strong. The walls were 2 m thick and follow the natural curves of the hill. They surrounded big inner yard with many residential, administrative, agricultural buildings and churches. Archaeologists uncovered many coins and a ring with a stamp from the reign of King Peter I.
