Archimandrite Onufri Popovich (Hilendarski) is a prominent Bulgarian cultural activist from the period of the Bulgarian Renaissance (Vazrajdaneto). He was born in the village of Enina, Kazanlak region. He comes from a priestly family, and his secular name is Bogdan Minkov.
Brief biography:
In 1814 Bogdan Minkov became a teacher in Enina, where he teached and speak on Bulgarian language instead of Slavonic. Later (in 1816) he went to Hilandar monastery where accepted his monastic name Onufri. In 1830 and 1836 he returned to Kazanlak and preached for the independent of the Bulgarian church. Around 1840 he rewrite the Paisiy "Slav-bulgarian history" (Istoria Slavyano-bulgarska).
Onufri was the first priest in the church "St. Stephen" in Istanbul. He visited many places like Mount Athos, Constantinople, Jerusalem, Bucharest Russia. He know Greek, Serbian, Romanian, Turkish and Russian languages.
Archimandrite Onufri Hilendarski died in Hilandar monastery around year of 1865.
In appreciation of the great Bulgarian, his fellow-villagers by Enina named a street in his name and on the 200th anniversary of the oldest Renaissance School in Kazanlak region (Onufrievoto school) in 2014 was built a monument of Archimandrite Onufri Hilendarski.
