Gradeshki monastery "St. John Predcheta"
Gradeshki monastery "St. John Predcheta" is located on 1.5 kilometers north-west of the village of Gradeshnitsa. Its establishment is related to a late-Roman and early-Bulgarian fortress in the Kaleto area that existed until the beginning of the XI-th century when Bulgaria was overtaken by the Romans and also, to a medieval settlement (known as "Selishteto"/"The Settlement") that existed until the Second Bulgarian State (XII-XIVth century). It is assumed that the monastery was built on the foundations of an old medieval Temple, evidences for which are the embedded stone pieces.
Today`s Monastery complex consists of two parts: an internal monastery yard and a farm yard. The complex is fully enclosed by high walls of stone (up to 2 metres) has 4 big and 2 small gates. The residential buildings are located in the southwestern part (to the river) and in the Southeastern part (to the path), and are connected in the corner on the second floor with a small chapel (St.Ivan Rilski).
The monastery church was built in 1861 year and consists of a single nave, and represents a solid construction of hewed stone pieces. Near the altar is located an iconostasis with icons of Jesus Christ, The Virgin Mary with child and others and some wood-crafts with floral and animal motifs.
In our time the Gradeshki monastery is functional, but there are no monks.
