Category: Archaeological site

Location: Tatul

Longtitude: 25.55243969 Latitude: 41.54555692

This ancient Thracian tomb and sanctuary was discovered in 2000 in area located east of village of Tatul. According to professor Ovcharov (notable Bulgarian archaeologist) the tomb and sanctuary are of an influential Thracian leader who was deified after his death.

Around 30 clay altars and other items from the XIX-th - XVIII-th century BC have been excavated. The most famous among them is from the Iron Age - figure of a nude male, which means the sanctuary was used without interruption in the period. A stone wall was erected surrounding the hill between the VI-th and the I-st century BC, and the temple was constructed shortly thereafter, with the religious complex gradually expanding and the religious activity worshipping the man buried in Tatul shifting to the mausoleum that was built.
