Church St. Spas
The church St. Spas is located in the old part of town of Nessebur. It was built in the 17th century (1609 ) and was the only church built in Nessebar during the Ottoman slavery. It was built according to the Ottoman rules and its eastern wall was half dug into the ground.
The church is constructed from stone and mud , with wooden roof and small windows. It is small (11.70 x 5.70 meters) with one hall and one apses and there is no belfry and cupola.
Interior walls of the Saint Spas church are painted by anonimous painter in the beginning of XVII-th century with evangelic scenes and images of saints - Christ Baptism, the Christ Resurrection, the Entering of Christ in Jerusalem and many other.
The tombstone of a Byzantine princess Mataissa Cantacuzina Paleologina was saved in the church a long time. Now the gravestone is in the Archaeologicl museum.
Nowadays church is non-operating and works as museum.
