"Dolnoto kale" fortress
The remains of the late-antique and medieval fortress of "Dolno Kale" are situated 3 km southwest of the town of Harmanli, between the town and village of Ostar kamak. The castle was built on a hill, between the rivers of Harmanliiska and "Koru dere".
The site was naturally protected from the east, north and south with the slopes and hills covered with dense forest. The only available was the west side.
The Fortress "Dolno Kale" had a rectangular shape, and the surrounded area was about 5000m2. The fortress wall was made of river stones and broken pieces, bound with white mortar.
In the region of the fortress were discovered artifacts from the early-Byzantine (IV-VII century) and The Medieval (after XI to XIV century) times. There were discovered graves with massive bronze and glass bracelets, dated after the XI century. One of the most valuable finds was an aureus of the emperor Constans (337-350 ), which today is kept in the Town Museum of Harmanli.
