The remains of the Late Roman castle of Transmarisca are located in borders of nowadays town of Tutrakan.The fortification was built in the end of the III-th century by emperor Diokletian after one of his victories against enemy’s tribes. Part of 11-th Claudius Legion was accommodated there.
Transmariska fortress was occupied an area of 65 000 square meters and has had a length of 1000 m. During archaeological excavations were discovered a part of the northern castle wall with two four-cornered turrets and another part of the southern castle wall with a four-cornered and a cornered fan-formed turret.
The fortress existed untill the beginning of VII-th century. Later, parts of its north-western wall were used for building of a new medieval fortification system of Tutrakan.
