Type: Reserve
Location: Village Vardim »
In Bulgarian: Резерват Старият Дъб на Остров Вардим »
Vardim is one of the largest (115 km2) of the total 84 islands in the Bulgarian section of Danube river. It is located near the village of Vardim east of Svishtov. There is located the Old Oak reserve - a protected area with national and international importance.
The existence of alluvial and alluvial-meadow soils predispose the growth of hydrophilic vegetation. Common plants here are willow, poplar, ash, and "Vardimski Oak" species, which can be found only on the island.
On Ilsand of Vardim can be seen also various species of birds. Some of the most famous are herons, cormorants, and fallow deer, whose places of nesting are declared protected sites.
