Sokolna natural reserve in Stara Planina mountain
Sokolna reserve is part of the Central Balkan National Park. It was officially proclaimed natural reserve in 1979 (11 July). The reserve is located in the Stara Planina, on the territory of the municipality of Pavel Banya, near villages of Skobelevo and Assen. It is situated on an area of 1250 hectares and covers part of the Triglav mountain range, the Valley of the river of Sokolna and Kyu dere.
The landscape of the reserve is various, which is a prerequisite for the rich presence of plants (40 of them declared rare and endangered) and animal species.
Among the representatives of the flora in the region are the the Stara Planina primrose, the Stara Planina edelweiss, the Bulgarian rock dill, etc.
The wildlife in the reserve consists primarily of birds (over 40 species, some of them declared rare and endangered). These are the Golden Eagle, Falcon, Peregrine Falcon, great and little Hawk, owl and others.
