Kamen Rid sanctuary
The archeological site "Kamen Rid" is located on a high rocky plateau, 10 km away of the town of Isperih. It is included in the borders of the Historical -archaeological reserve of "Sboryanovo". Throughout the entire period when the region was inhabited, the place is considered sacred and here they were built different religious sites. In VI century BC., in the deep valley at the foot of the "Kamen Rid" elevation there was a shrine devoted to the underground deities, the water and the health. Part of it (the rock-carved altar with grooves in it) is situated where nowadays is the entrance to the courtyard of Demir Baba Tekke. In the northern and southern wall of turbe huge rocks - the remains of other sanctuary. Later, at the same place, was built a Christian chapel, and at the beginning of XVII century - the turbe - tomb of the alliance saint Demir Baba.
Kamen Rid Sanctuary is the oldest Thracian sanctuary found within the archaeological reserve. It is dated to the early Iron Age (I century BC) and is believed it existed 700 years - until the beginning of the Hellenistic era. The site occupies an area of 48 decares and is surrounded by 1m high stone walls. There are no other defense facilities. In the complex were found two facilities in the form of circles, built of stone and with one entrance. In the middle of the first were found traces of a sanctuary and in other there is a century-old tree.
In Archaeological excavations of the site were found many pottery objects, amulets, and anthropomorphic clay figures. They were thrown in ritual pits as gifts to the gods. In the pits were found remains of a human skull and skeleton, suggesting that here were carried out human sacrifices.
