St.Dimitar Cathedral Temple
The church "St. Dimitar" in town of Vidin is the second largest in Bulgaria after St Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia. It was built at the end of XVII century and during its existence it has always been a center of cultural life of the Bulgarians from the region.
The original building was wooden and years after its construction the temple was demolished and rebuilt again by stones. The construction began in 1885 and was fully completed, painted and ceremonial open of the church was in 1926. Project is by Gencho Kanev and the temple was modeled as one-bell construction similar to the Varna cathedral, which was built by him between 1884 and 1886, but the architect Bahnani changed the project.
The current building has a cruciform shape with three longitudinal and one transverse nave. The central dome is 33 meters high and rests on four pillars that emphasize its size and appearance.
Church "St. Dimitar" in Vidin was declared a cultural monument of national importance.
