Fortress Baluk dere
Type: Fortress
Location: Village Slaveevo »
In Bulgarian: Крепост Балък дере »
The ruins of this fortress are located in locality of Baluk dere gully, near the border with Greece, at hill between villages of Slaveevo and Huhla. The fortress was constructed in the IV-th century and was probably prompted by moving the seat of the Roman Empire from Rome to Constantinople. During that period, a series of fortresses was constructed near the new capital city of the empire and the Baluk Dere fortress was one of them.
During the excavation works in the fortress and in a necropolis (XI-th century) the archaeologists were found many objects related to the culture and customs of local population.
Probably the fortress was demolished in the first half of the XIII-th century because finds from a later period were not found.
