The Monument to the 3rd Volunteer Battalion and Colonel Kalitin in city of Stara Zagora is dedicated to the heroes - Russian soldiers and Bulgarian volunteers, who died in the battle for the defence of the town at 19.07.1877 during the Russian-Turkish war.
The memorial was designed by the architect Atanas Donkov and built by the stone mason Zlati Amzov. The ornaments and details are work ofthe master Tenjo Ibushev, the sculptor Stoyan Stoyanov and the painter Peter Tsiporanov.
The monument has shape of a sarcophagus, on which is foot a bronze lion. The memorial was opened in 1927, on the 50th anniversary of the battle for Stara Zagora and the lion, which is symbolizing the power of Bulgarians, was placed two years later - in 1929.
Texts on the memorial are : "Liberty or Death" and "Liberated, grateful Bulgaria."
