History museum
The museum activity in Balchik was started in the beginning of XX century with the first archaeological research of Karel Shkorpil, who examined a tomb of a Roman doctor-priest from the II century. For official visits the museum was opened in 1937. The majority of its exhibitswere archaeological finds from the region. Unfortunately, in late August 1940., a month before returning of Balchik to Bulgaria, the exhibits and pictures of the exposure are loaded on the steamer "Oytuz" and taken to Romania.
Today the fund of History Museum includes more than 20 000 exhibits representing the history of Balchik since its appearance in VI century BC till the liberation from the Romanian occupation in 1940. Among the exhibits are many of the artifacts found in and around the city, which dating back to different periods from Eneolithic till the Middle ages - ceramics, glass, sculptural images of Cybele, epigraphic monuments, architectural details and collections of coins.
An Important place is given to photographs and documents related to the town life after the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule (1878 ) to the returning of Balchik as Bulgarian possession in 1940.
