Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary
Type: Church
Location: Village Patalenitsa »
In Bulgarian: Църквата "Успение на Пресвета Богородица" »
The Church of the Assumption of Mary in the village of Patalenitsa was built in beginning of XVIII century and is the oldest functioning church in Plovdiv diocese. It is a small one-nave building with vaulted ceilings, dug about 1 meter into the ground. The digging of the Christian temples in the ground during the Ottoman domination is related with a Turkish law prohibiting the construction of high Christian buildings. The Church has no dome and is 2.5 meters high (with the altar) and 6 meters wide. The iconostasis of the church is timber, without carving, with 3 rows of icons, which together with the wall icons are painted mainly in XIX century.
In the past there was a monastery school there.
