Holy Virgin church
The Church of the Holy Virgin (Sveta Bogoroditsa) is one of the many interesting places and cultural monuments in town of Sozopol. It is located in old part of the town and was built during the Ottoman times in the XV-th century over ruins of of an earlier christian temple. It was constructed half-buried in the earth as was required by the Turkish, who banned Bulgarians from building tall buildings.
The church is a wooden construction decorated with remarkable iconostasis, icons and fine woodcarving made by local masters. Two of the icons in the church prove of the greatest interest: "Jesus Christ" and "Holy Virgin". The church-yard is beautiful and hosts a huge fig tree.
The church has been put in the registers of UNESCO among the important and precious monuments of world culture.
