Thracian stone sanctuary in Kamenska Barchina area
This Thracian rock sanctuary is located between town of Malko Tarnovo and village of Gramatikovo in the "Kamenska barchina" area (10 km nort-east of Malko Tarnovo). The sanctuary has been dedicated to the god of the sun - Helios. Scientists believe that the sanctuary was built sometime between 1000 and 1500 BC.
One of the most popular attractions are the so-called "solar circles" cut into the stones. Specialists believe they are related with the cult to the Sun and god Apolon. Their location, in the highest point of the rock, proves their connection with the cult to sun, which was practiced by the ancient Thracians. As for the circular altars they must have been used for the preparation of "sacred wine" and the performance of sacrifices through pouring of liquids (water, milk, wine, blood).
