Medieval fortress "Strelchansko Kale"
Strelcha and the whole South Thrace region was included in borders of the First Bulgarian State in the IX century. Since then is dated the castle Strelchansko Kale. It is located 2.5km south of town of Strelcha, at the right bank of the Strelchanska Luda Yana River, in Galata locality. For centuries in its foothills was existed a town called Strelych or Strelets (means Shooter)-town, hence the name of the modern town of Strelcha.
The fortress was built with very impressive walls - up to 8 meters in height. There was а church in the citadel, which has not been studied in detail yet. Nowadays, the castle is partially destroyed, but there are visible well preserved parts of the residential premises, the church and parts of the walls.
Strelchansko Kale castle existed until the XIV century. The legends tell that during the April uprising in 1876 the there was an idea the fortress to be used from the local population as refuge.
