Astronomical Observatory
The Astronomical Observatory in Belogradchik was built in 1961 by a group of astronomy fans, led by Hristo Kostov - a teacher in physics at the Belogradchik high school.
The Observatory has 2 domes (diameters 6 and 4 meters) and 3 telescopes:
- the first (and oldest one) is a 15 cm telescope "Carl Zeiss" with a system "Maksutov - Cassegrain", provided with star and planetary cameras. This telescope is currently used for demonstrations only;
- 60 cm telescope "Cassegrain" produced by Carl Zeiss - Jena. It was installed in 1969 and is the second largest telescope at the Balkans after the NAO Rojen
- a compact 14-inch telescope "Celestron" with system Schmidt - Cassegrain.
Since 1976 the Astronomical Observatory in Belogradchik is a base of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
