Church of Assumption
The Assumption Church in village of Uzundjovo is the largest rural church in Bulgaria. It was destroyed and converted into a mosque in 1593 during the Ottoman rule, and was restored again in a Christian church in the beginning of XX century. These changes in the function of the building give the church a specific vision, combining various elements of Christianity and Islam.
In 2007 Haskovo municipality made a major restoration of the temple. All of the icons and frescoes are restored. The windows are decorated with stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. There was added a new iconostasis (its size puts it among the largest in the country) - a work of Usta Darin Bozhkov (master from Tryavna).
During the restoration were found two ancient religious and philosophical inscriptions in Arabic that have not yet been accurately dated.
