The fourth largest monastery in Bulgaria - Klisurski monastery "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" is located at the foot of the mountain peak "Todorini kukli" (1785 m), east of the village of Barzia (direction Varshetz), 9 km away from Berkovica, 12 km from Varshets and about 70-80 km. from the capital city of Sofia.
The monastery dates back to the Second Bulgarian Empire (1240). During the Ottoman rule it was repeatedly destroyed, but was completely rebuilt in the XIX century by Alexander Damianov (monk Antim) from Berkovica. In 1869 was built the magernitsta, then the chapel "St. Nicholas" and the holy spring. From 1887 to 1890 was built the church " St. Apostles Cyril and Methodius".
Klisyra monastery "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" functions as a male monastery hostel until 2008. Since then it is transformed to convent. There is a icon workshop in the monastery where sisterhood paints the icons in the tradition of the ancient Ohrid School.
