Type: Monastery
Location: Village Zlatovrah »
In Bulgarian: Араповски манастир "Света Неделя" »
Arapovo monastery "St. Nedelya" is located near the village of Zlatovrah whose former name was Arapovo, hence the name of the monastery. It was founded in 1856 and is the only monastery built during the Ottoman rule.
The construction of the monastery was initiated by the monk Sofroniyi and implemented with funds donated by one of the most famous rebels in this region - Angel Voyvoda.
The monastery church "St. Nedelya" was completed in 1859 and is dedicated to the Holy Martyr Kyriaki (or Nedelya in Slavic). The building is a large, cross-triconchal, with four piers and domed apses.
The murals are work of the artists Alexi Atanasov and Georgi Danchov-Zografina. Among the themes are scenes from the life of the Slavic apostles, which is a novelty in the Bulgarian painting from these times: the creation of the Bulgarian alphabet, the adoption of Christianity by King Boris I and enlightenment of the Bulgarians, many Bulgarian saints, etc. Very impressive are the scenes of death and funeral of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius.
With its unique architecture Arapovo monastery is one of the most remarkable monuments of the Bulgarian Revival.
