March 3 is the public holiday of Bulgaria. On this date (by the old calendar Feb. 19) was signed the San Stefano Peace Treaty between Russia and the Ottoman Empire, which was the end of the Russo-Turkish Liberation War, 1877-1878. It is created an independent Bulgarian state with Christian government and the right to have an army.
The territory of Bulgaria comprises the principality of Vidin, Vratsa, Tarnovo, Ruse, Silistra, Varna, Sofia, Pirot and Vransky in the Moravian region, almost all of Macedonia (except the southernmost areas), parts of Kosovo (Kacanik) and Albania (Boboshtica), part of Eastern Thrace and Southern Dobrudja. Unfortunately, later the Treaty of Berlin Congress (June-July 1978) cuts the territories of the new Bulgarian state.
San-Stefano`s Bulgaria became a symbol of a national unity and a fundamental national ideal of the Bulgarians for many years ahead.
